Look through the answers to the most popular questions.
What can I do to prevent heel pain associated with plantar fasciitis?
To prevent heel pain we recommend stretching your calf muscles 2-3x a day for 10-15 minute increments as well as supportive shoe gear with a sturdy sole, icing, and avoid walking barefoot. In some cases, oral medication may be needed for pain management or a possible steroid injection to the heel. Your doctor may also recommend shoe inserts if you have a certain foot type contributing to your condition.
Is it safe to get pedicures?
We do not recommend getting pedicures especially if you are a diabetic patient, as nail salons are a frequent source of bacterial and fungal infections such as ingrown toenails, onychomycosis (fungus in the nail) and athletes foot.
How long after an injury will I start to feel better?
Depending on what anatomical structure was injured, it can take anywhere between 6-8 weeks for your body to heel from an injury such as an ankle sprain or achilles tendon injury. In some cases, an MRI is needed to evaluate the integrity of the muscle or tendon, and a surgical procedure may be needed for correction. Following an injury, it is best to try to avoid walking on the affected area, ice the area of injury, and take an over the counter medication for pain management until your doctor can evaluate your injury.
What can I do to prevent numbness and tingling from peripheral neuropathy?
The best way to prevent neuropathy from progressing is to keep your blood sugar levels controlled if you are a diabetic patient. There are oral prescription medications available for management of symptoms. Also, B vitamins such as B1 (thiamine and benfotiamine) B6, and B12 are useful in treating neuropathy symptoms as well as alpha lipoic acid. Talk to your doctor about supplementations and medication dosages.
